Psalm 18:1-6 1 I love you, O LORD, my strength. 2 The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. 3 I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies. 4 The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of destruction assailed me; 5 the cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. 6 In my distress I called upon the LORD; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears.
All of us know the feeling of being in deep, dark, trouble. It is part of the human experience. Whether it is our sin finally catching up to us, our circumstances overwhelming us, being pursued physically or emotionally by an adversary, physical danger confronting us, or just the need to be rescued from any kind of danger whatsoever. "Fellas, we are in deep weeds."
When, not if, but WHEN we find ourselves in this type of situations, something very revealing will happen. We find out what we truly trust. We find out what our real hope is. And we find out what we really think about God. When verses 4-5 happen to us, We will call out. The question is: To whom or what will we call?
The Psalmist here, David, makes it very clear whom he calls out to: He calls out to the Lord. He calls out like, all of us to his God. The problem is, not all gods are created equal. The God that David calls out to is the true God and Lord over all. Is the god that you call out to the true God of the Scriptures or a god in your own making? Quickly reread verses 1-3.
Is that how you see God? Some would say God is all those things for them, and yet midst of their trouble rely on others to be their rock (co-dependency), themselves to be their strength (pride), their own abilities to be their stronghold (narcisism), or other things to be their shield of the deliverer from their particular issue (false gods). How do you see God.
Here is the all for us as believers in Jesus Christ. God through Jesus Christ must be our first and greatest (and in most cases) our only strength, rock, fortress, deliverer, God, refuge, shield, horn of salvation, savior, redeemer and stronghold. We must turn to him first, last and all along the middle. He is truly our only hope. Let us turn to Him and Him alone. In doing so we are assured here that our cry has reached His ear, and he will move heaven and earth (read the rest of the Psalm) to come to our rescue.
